Company-Sergeant Major S. Hewlett, D.C.M., was decorated for his actions during the relief of Ladysmith.
The 2nd Battalion, Somerset Light Infantry arrived at Cape Town in December 1899 and, having been rushed round to Natal, joined the 10th Brigade in General Warren's Fifth Division. They were present at the battles and operations of Spion Kop, Tugela Heights, 1st de Wet hunt, Mooifontein and the north-east Orange River Colony.
