A ROMAN MARBLE GROUP OF DIONYSUS AND A SATYR circa 2nd century a.d. Dionysus standing with his legs crossed, the left in front of the right, his left arm over the shoulder of his companion who bends forward from the weight of the deity he supports, the satyr with his arm around the god's waist, Dionysus nude but for a mantle draped over his shoulders, a slender vertical fold curving around his legs, tendrils of hair falling on to each shoulder, his right arm originally raised, perhaps holding grapes on a kantharos, the satyr wearing a goat skin tied around his neck, the knot at his chest, the goat's wooly pelt spread out on his back, its flattened horned head resting on his buttocks 23 in. (59 cm.) high
