This casket was presented to Margherita, Queen of Italy, on the occasion of her silver wedding anniversary by the Rome School of Needlework on the 22 April, 1893.
Margherita, Princess of Savoia-Genova, married her first cousin, Umberto I, King of Italy, (1844-1900) on the 22 April, 1868 at the Palazzo Reale, Turin. She was the daughter of Ferdinando Alberto, Duke of Genoa, (1822-1855) who was the brother of Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy, (1820-1878).
The important commericial port of Trapani in southern Sicily was situated close to large and extensive coral banks. The Guild of Coral Workers was established in 1628 and developed up to the 19th century a lucrative trade in coral works of art.
