Oblong, the hinged cover engraved and nielloed with facsimilie Cyrillic signatures, the base engraved and nielloed with musical notes, with a hinged vesta compartment and a tinder cord with a gold finial, the inside engraved in Russian with the date '24 December 1886', marked inside cover and inside base, with a typed note describing the case as 'From the Collection of the Late Prince Theodore of Russia'

The facsimile signatures are 'Pavel', 'Sergei' and 'Ella' for Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and his wife Elizabeth Feodorovna, née Princess of Hesse und bei Rhein and Sergei's younger brother, Grand Duke Pavel Alexandrovich.
