A pair of chairs most likely from the same set were sold Christie's House sale, Stoneleigh Abbey, Kenilworth, Warwickshire, 15-16 October 1981, lot 89.
These chairs, with their palm-flowered and reed-enriched frames, relate to chair patterns in the 1823 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of London and Lancaster, and a set of dining-chairs delivered by the firm in 1825 to Earl Cornwallis for Linton Park, Kent (see S. Sartin, Gillow Chairs and Fashion, Exhibition Catalogue, Blackburn, 1991, pp.34-35).
A related set of chairs was sold by Lord Brownlow, Belton House, Lincolnshire, Christie's house sale, 26 September 1988, lot 113. Much of the Gillows furniture came to Belton House when the family's London home in Carlton House Terrace was sold in the 1920s. A further related set is shown in situ in the Dining-Room at Holme Lacy, Herefordshire (see C. Latham, In English Homes, New York, 1909, vol.I, p.387).
