The design of these appliques closely follows that of a drawing by Jean-Charles Delafosse dating from around 1775 (see H. Ottomeyer & P. Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, p. 187, No. 3.9.6). A pair of wall appliques by the bronzier Vian were sold in these rooms, 6 June 1991, lot 75.
The bronzier Henry Vian, is recorded briefly in Les bronzes Dorès franais du XVIIIe siècle by Pierre Verlet, Picard 1987, pps. 342 and 344. They specalised exclusively on gilt-bronze, especially light fittings, and produced articles of the highest quality, so much so that their style of casting and gilding can often be mistaken for earlier work.
