Jean-Baptiste Lebas, maître in 1756
Lebas executed several sets of fauteuils of this model, which were particularly admired by English collectors. Similar examples appear in the collection of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry in the drawing room at Boughton House, Northamptonshire, which are illustrated in T. Murdoch (ed.), Boughton House, London, 1992, p. 24, pl. 6. A suite of seat-furniture, with six identical fauteuils, formerly in the collection of the Earl of Sefton, was sold in these Rooms, 6 December 1957, lot 177 while a further set of three fauteuils were sold from the collection of the Earl of Harrington at Elvaston Castle, in these Rooms, 1 July 1966, lot 68.
