'The Nanking Cargo'
The porcelain offered in the following lots were part of the 'Nanking cargo', the well documented VOC ship 'De Geldermalsen' which sunk during her homeward journey in 1752. The contents was salvaged by Captain Michael Hatcher and offered for sale at Christie's Amsterdam in the spring of 1986. Besides some finds of metalwork, bronzes and gold, the amount of porcelain retrieved was spectacular: more than 150.000 pieces. Dinner services, teabowls and saucers, coffee-cups and saucers, single dishes, soup plates, bowls and beer tankards; a great variety of shapes of export porcelain was present. Besides a variety of shapes, a variety of decoration was to be found as well, examples of which are represented by the lots offered.
