Lot Essay

The original set of wallpaper by Réveillon of this sophisticated pattern,in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs,Paris, appears as 600 in the firm's records and can be dated to 1788.It unusually combines the traditional block-printing technique with painting in diluted inks and the application of gold leaf (see L.Hoskins,The Papered Wall,1994,p.82,figs.105-6).
Six panels of this design by Réveillon were sold Sotheby's Monaco, 14 June 1982, lot 431.
