The present saucer would have originally been accompanied by a cup decorated with a portrait of the noted author Charles de Montesquieu (1689-1755), owner of the château. Such cabinet cups and saucers were manufactured by Sèvres circa 1820-1825. The present saucer may be that shown at the Louvre by Sèvres in an exhibition of new wares January 1824, no. 22H. A similar cup and saucer painted with a portrait of Louis, Dauphin of France and with the Château de Fontainebleau, dated 1822/23, is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a gift in the memory of Frederick P. Victoria (1993.276.1/.2).
