The present cup and saucer, together with the portrait cup of Napoleon I offered in the previous lot, are likely the pair recorded as entering the factory salesroom in 1839.
As the Louis-Philippe monogram mark found on the present cup was in use 1834-1845 and the star mark found on the saucer 1831-1834, the decoration on the set must have been completed in 1834.
The portrait of the Empress was painted by Marie Adélaïde Ducluzeau after a miniature by Daniel Saint (1778-1847). Née Durand, she is recorded at the factory as a painter 1818-1849.
Antoine-Gabriel Boullemier jeune is recorded at Sèvres as a gilder 1803-1842.
