The marriage of Robert Joseph Collier to Sarah Van Alen took place on July 26, 1902 at Wakehurst, the Newport summer residence of the bride's family and was one of the most talked of social events of the season. The groom was the son of Peter Collier, the founder of Collier's Weekly. The ballroom ceremony was followed by another at St. Mary's Church and the reception was held aboard Pierre Lorillard's yacht Rahda. The ushers included Condé Nast, Milton Barger, F.C. Havemeyer, and J. Insley Blair.
