    Lot Essay

A small cloisonné enamel box of this shape and approximate size (7.1 cm.) with similar lotus scroll decoration was included in the Special Exhibition of Covered Boxes from East Asia (Tokubetsu Tenji Higashi Ajia no Futamono), Japan, 1984, pp. 74-5, no. 109. This type of box would most likely have held incense and been part of an incense set which would also have included a censer and a small vase to hold the incense implements.
