Realistic ivory carvings of animals appear to be fairly rare, but two figures of standing stags still retaining some of the original colored staining are published. One in the O.C.S. exhibition catalogue, Chinese Ivories from the Shang to the Qing, British Museum, 24 May - 19 August 1984, no. 221; the other in Chinese Ivories from the Kwan Collection, Art Gallery, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, 28 July - 14 October 1990, no. 152. The latter is shown standing on a green-stained ivory base that is similar in its carving to that of the present base.
