A SUITE OF 18K GOLD JEWELRY, BY VAN CLEEF & ARPELS
Comprising a necklace, designed as a flexible tapering band of polished gold scrolling ribbons, enhanced by graduated pavé-set diamond florets; and a pair of ear clips en suite, mounted in platinum and gold, necklace 15½ ins., with French assay marks
This necklace and ear clips...artfully designed and eminently wearable...typifies the spirit that permeated the jewelry Van Cleef & Arpels created in the 1940's. Designers at the prestigious maison broke with tradition, producing pieces that overstep pure ornamental status and became statements of jewelry art.
On this necklace, the design is carried out with superb craftsmanship. Snippets of gold ribbon are attached at the center to a serpent chain with such artfulness that they appear as if arranged at random with no beginning or end. There is no regularity to the ribbon-like elements, yet, there is a rhythm to the design as it slowly flows up to the clasp. Diamond-set flowers, which appear to be almost 'pressed' onto the ribbon interlacing, provided 'sparkle points' to complement as well as counterbalance the gold.
