Very few Jingtai marked cloisonne pieces can be dated to that period with certainty. These scroll ends conform to 15th Century cloisonne techniques and the marks differ markedly from later added examples and are very likely original. Compare the small cloisonne water container decorated with scrolling lotus on a blue ground and bearing a Jingtai reign mark illustrated in Great National Treasures of China, col. pl. 76. The comparison demonstrates that the present examples were intended to be seen horizontally as they would be when attached to a scroll since the lotus flowers would then issue upwards from the undulating stems as they do in the water container.
