The detailing on this miniature chiffonier timepiece is quintessential Thomas Cole. The engraving is of finest quality and even extends to the base of the key drawer. It bears a thematic resemblance to sideboard clock by Cole sold Christie's London, 5 July 2006, lot 43 but in decorative terms is considerably more elaborate.
Thomas Cole (1800-1864) exhibited six clocks at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and the catalogue described him as an 'inventor, designer and maker'. Of the six, two were mounted with malachite. See J.B. Hawkins, Thomas Cole & Victorian Clockmaking, Sydney 1975, p.14.
