Initially called a broc 'nouvelle forme' when first introduced at Vincennes in November 1753, this baluster jug was renamed a broc 'Roussel' in June 1754. Made in three sizes, of which the present lot is the second size, it was combined with six different types of basin. For a full discussion of this form, see R. Savill, The Wallace Collection, Catalogue of Sèvres Porcelain, London, 1988, pp. 697- 698.
The letter F as it appears on the present jug, found on Vincennes pieces painted with flowers, figures and trophies made between 1754 and 1758, is yet to be identified.
