The arched, tapering shield shape centered by a circular finger aperture surrounded on top by finely incised scrolls on both sides, carved along the edges with the openwork figures of a dragon and a phoenix

Lot Essay

The design of this pendant is based on Western Han dynasty prototypes, such as the example excavated from the tomb at Xishan, Yongcheng, Henan province, illustrated by Gu Fang, The Complete Collection of Unearthed Jades in China, vol. 5, Beijing, 2005, p. 135.
