The Julia Shackelford Hunter Collection of snuff bottles, acquired 1948-1949.
JULIA SHACKELFORD HUNTER COLLECTION OF SNUFF BOTTLES (LOTS 1111-1135 INCLUSIVE)
Christie’s are delighted to be entrusted with this 25-lot consignment of snuff bottles from the collection of Julia Shackelford Hunter (1919 -2014). Julia Shackelford married Freelon Hunter in July 1948 and, later the same year, they travelled to Shanghai, where Freelon took up a posting in the Finance department with General Electric. It was in Shanghai that they developed a fascination with this miniature art form and assembled their collection of snuff bottles in 1948 and early 1949. After subsequent postings to Hong Kong, the Philippines and Venezuela, the couple moved back to the United States in 1951.
