The brig Niagara successfully helped secure control of Lake Erie under the command of Oliver Hazard Perry. She was intentionally sunk in Misery Bay in 1820. The cold, fresh water preserved the Niagara, allowing her to be raised in 1913. This plank of wood was probably removed from the Niagara as she was undergoing restoration that same year by the carver. The board was found in an attic by the father of the consignor.
