A Worcester deep plate from the Duke of Gloucester service
Circa 1770, gold crescent mark
Of conventional type, the centre with a large group of redcurrants and foliage within a border of specimen fruit, including cherries, grapes, raspberries, damsons and plums divided by five blue and gilt C-scroll panels enclosing insects, within a shaped gilt feuilles-de-choux and turquoise line rim, the underside with two scattered pink flower-sprays and a spray of red berries
9 in. (23 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Other pieces of this service seem usually to be decorated with a variety of fruits, often including redcurrants; the present lot is exceptional in that it is decorated exclusively with that fruit.
