Lot Essay

The design of this carpet is taken from that of a famous pair of Polonaise rugs formerly belonging to Prince Johann of Liechtenstein, one of which is now in the Keir Collection while the other is in the Islamic Museum, Berlin. These were first published in Sarre, F.: Catalogue of the Exhibition of Oriental Carpets, K. K. Österreiches Handelsmuseum, Vienna, 1891, cat. no.391; in the illustrated catalogue of 1892, of which a copy is sold as lot 228 in this sale, it appears as pl.IV, no.5. The present carpet must have been made very soon after this date of publication.
