Professor Jaap Bolten has kindly confirmed the attribution to Bloemaert. He suggests that the drawing might date to circa 1615, comparing it to the drawing from the Cobenzl Collection at the Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, no. 238.
The present lot may also be compared to the studies of seated women sold at Christie's London, 1 July 1981, lot 116 and to that sold in these Rooms, 31 May 1990, lot 73. A further comparable study of a seated woman was sold at Christie's Amsterdam, 25 November 1981, lot 58. The latter was partly copied by Franois Boucher, and engraved in reverse as plate 3 in Boucher's Livre d'Etude, illustrating the influence of Bloemaert's work on French 18th Century art.
