It is to be noted that a portrait of an elderly lady, also signed and dated 1644, is in the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Rotterdam (R.E.O.Ekkart, Nederlandse Portretten uit de zeventiende eeuw, 1995, pp.197/8, no.71, ill.). Both portraits reveal influence of Rembrandt. The presence of the artist in The Hague in 1644 is confirmed by the inscription Fecit Haga in the present lot. He had settled there in 1643 after much travel notably in France.
The sitter has not as yet been identified.
