These miniatures depict Napoleon I and his marshalls Joachim Murat (d. 1815) and Michel Ney (d. 1815).
Murat, a dashing cavalry commander, rose through the ranks and married Caroline Bonaparte, which ensured his title as marshall in 1804. He was given the Kingdom of Naples by Napoleon in 1808 and ruled until his arrest and execution after Napoleon's fall in 1815.
Ney joined the Hussar's regiment in 1787 and was quickly promoted due to his bravery and elan. He fought in many battles for Napoleon but ultimately sided with those who demanded Napoleon abdicate. He did, however, side with Napoleon again for the 100 Days' Campaign, and was put on trial for treason by the returning Bourbons and sentenced to death in 1815.
