THE PROPERTY OF A MEMBER OF THE ESTERHAZY FAMILY
In the 18th century the increasing popularity of horse racing led to
the evolvement of horse painting as a genre. The race-course at Newmarket provided artists with patrons as the noblemen who devoted themselves to racing often spent part of their winnings on commissioning portraits of their victorious horses. This patronage increased with such events as the formation of the Jockey club in 1752 and the foundation between 1776 and 1814 of the St Leger, the Derby and other classic races. The present collection of paintings and prints reflect the quality and diversity of this genre, representing the captivating multiformity of the sport.
