First edition of the companion work to Traité de dynamique, D'Alembert's significant contribution to Newtonian mechanics (1743). In it "D'Alembert's Principle" is employed to describe fluid motion. Through his own treatment of the problems of fluid mechanics D'Alembert often arrived at the same conclusions as Daniel Bernoulli in his Hydrodynamica of 1738 (see lot 23). Fine copy.
