Important autograph letter signed by the scientific editor of the Encyclopédie to Gabriel Cramer, professor of mathematics in Geneva, whose major work, Introduction à l'analyse des lignes courbes algébriques, appeared in the same year that he received this letter from D'Alembert. Both D'Alembert and Cramer carried on extensive scientific correspondences with the major philosophers and mathematicians of their day. In the present letter D'Alembert writes at length about his investigations, notably on the lunar orbit, and mentions Newton, Diderot, Rameau and Maupertuis. He also writes about the impending publication of the Encyclopédie, its prospectus and his planned preface.
