Lot Essay

According to Professor William Coles, A Moonlit Stroll was probably executed in Sainte-Adresse on the Normandy coast. Early in his career, Stevens established his reputation as a painter of elegant women. Later in life he turned to marine subjects, and the present painting successfully embodies these two interests.

Professor William Coles has confirmed the authenticity of this painting.
