Lot Essay

Diamond Jubilee was by St. Simon out of Perdita and so full brother of Persimmon. Both brothers ran their Derbys and St. Legers (1896 and 1900) for their owner and breeder, the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII). Diamond Jubilee was a bay colt, foaled in 1897, the year of Queen Victoria'a Diamond Jubilee. He also scored in the 2000 Guineas and in all won six races including The Eclipse Stakes apart from his three classics. He was highly temperamental and was ridden by Herbert Jones, who was only his lad until he rode him in the 2000 Guineas, and who thereafter became a leading jockey and rode the Royal Horses for many years. Sold for £30,000 to the King of Argentina in 1906, Diamond Jubilee became the champion stallion in Argentina for serveral seasons.
