Alice Neel often drew and painted subjects that were a part of her everyday environment, her everyday life. She invites us into her immediate surroundings through a uniquely empathetic attachment to the world around her. Archway is a soulful and contemplative picture that depicts the view from Neel's Greenwich Village apartment. When abstraction and non-objective subject matter were becoming the norm in New York's art scene, Neel held strong with her honest and forthright investigations into the human condition.
