Original purple cloth, the upper cover with title in gilt below the royal arms blocked in gilt (inner hinges repaired). Provenance: Mrs. Pew (author's presentation inscription 'Presented to Mrs. Pew with best regards, by the author William Allen'). PRESENTATION COPY. Allen had accompanied Richard Lander and Oldfield and carried out a survey of the River Niger in 1832-1833. The present work was published in light of the interest that the proposed expedition of 1841-1842 (under the command of Captain Trotter) generated. Allen went on to command the Wilberforce on this ill-fated expedition.
