EIGHTEENTH CENTURY LITERATURE
ALLINE, Henry (1748-84). Hymns and Spiritual Songs. Boston: Peter Edes, 1786.
Half-sheet 12° (146 x 82mm). (Lightly browned, some staining.) Contemporary sheep, blind-tooled border on sides (front cover detached). Provenance: Edward Dun, jr. (early stamped booklabel).
RARE FIRST EDITION. Alline was a religious revivalist whose promulgation in Nova Scotia of the New Light movement helped to pave the way for the further introduction of Baptism and Methodism in the Canadian maritime provinces. His influential hymns, first published posthumously, express his religious fervour and somewhat unconvential convictions, and a number of them continue to be sung today among Canadian maritime Baptists. Bristol B-6231; Shipton & Mooney 44842.
