AMMANN, PAUL. Hortus Bosianus quod exoticus solum descriptus. Leipzig: Typis Krügerianis, 1686. 4to, 214 x 173mm., old half sheep, spine chipped, extremities scuffed, ownership stamp removed from title and dedication leaf, with small resultant hole in title, small tear to margin of A3, small sections torn away from lower blank margins of E3-4, plates browned. FIRST EDITION. Collation: [A], B-F4. Contents: [a1] title (verso blank), [A2] dedication to Caspari Bosio, Senatori Reipubl. Lips. (verso blank), [A3]r-B2r introduction, B2v-F4v catalogue. Folding engraved birds-eye-view of the garden by J.C.Oberdorffer after Elias Peine, extra-illustrated with a large folding plate of an American Aloe by M.B., published by Peine. A rare work on the exotic plants to be found in the garden (situated just outside the Grimmischen Gate in Leipzig) of the merchant and city councillor, Kaspar Bose. The head gardener appears to have been Peine, and when the Aloe flowered in August 1700 the plate was produced to commemorate the event: the stance of the figure in the foreground suggests that it is a portrait of Peine. Pritzel does not mention this work, but does mention a 1690 work by Peine, in German, on the same garden.
