Beazley, op.cit., notes that the amphora is in the tradition of the Berlin Painter, either by Hermonax or near him.
It has been suggested that the unusual graffito on the base is, perhaps, a ligature of pi and upsilon which has been classified as Trademark type 16b, by Alan Johnston. Cf. A. W. Johnston, Trademarks on Greek Vases, Warminster, 1979, no. 16b, 14, for a similar graffito.
