    AN EARLY MING CARVED CINNABAR LACQUER 'PEONY' CIRCULAR INCENSE BOX AND COVER
    YONGLE INCISED SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD (1403-1425)

    The gently domed cover finely carved to the buff ground depicting a single peony bloom, the foliated petals incised for detail, surrounded by leaves and flower buds, the box with three similar flowers, the interiors with a dark-brown lacquer, the recessed base on left side of the dark brown re-lacquered base is an incised apocryphal Yongle mark, on the other side under the lacquer is another Yongle mark
    2 1/4 in. (5.6 cm.) diam., Japanese wood box
