The lid carved with a scene of the Expulsion from the Garden of Eden; the hinged lid opening to reveal an interior with mirrored sides and a mirror on the underside of the lid, and the bottom with a relief scene of a courtly couple in an architectural landscape.
The lock altered; minor damages and restorations.
13 7/8 x 6 3/8 x 13¾ in. (35.2 x 16.2 x 34.9 cm.)

Lot Essay

This type of intarsia decoration carved in relief was a speciality of the city of Eger in modern-day Hungary, and was frequently employed - as here - to adorn cabinets and boxes.
