An Edwardian carved oak quarter-chiming longcase clock, early 20th century
The case with breakarch hood and relief carved to the front with foliate scrolls and lion masks, with panelled sides, a sound fret to the backboard, the 13½in. wide brass dial with engraved foliate spandrels to the silvered Roman chapter ring, the centre with engraved foliate scroll mask to a silvered seconds ring and retail plaque MAPPIN & WEBB LTD OXFORD ST LONDON W, with strike silent lever by IX, subsidiary silvered rings for chime/silent and Whittington/Westminster chimes, the substantial movement with four large pillars, with spot-finished back plate and deadbeat escapement, quarter chiming on eight tubular bells hanging from the backboard and with hour strike on further tubular bell to the side, the wood rod pendulum with calibrated brass rating nut -- 88½in. (225cm.) high
