Description de l'Égypte, Paris, 1809-1822, vol. 5, pl. 70, (reprinted, Köln, 1994, p. 539, pl. 70.)
Napoleon's attempt to conquer Egypt in 1798 led to the awakening of interest in 'Egyptology', when over 3000 illustrations of the monuments and antiquities of Egypt were published fron 1809 onwards by France's leading academics and savants under the direction of Vivant Denon. They had accompanied the ill-fated military expedition, working under extreme conditions to record every aspect of Egyptian life, from ancient monuments to ethnography.
