This bottle-carrier displays the distinctive low relief foliate carving on a pounced ground and squared paw feet characteristic of Irish furniture of the mid-eighteenth century. This example relates most closely to one illustrated in an article by the Knight of Glin entitled 'Irish Furniture', published in The Irish Heritage Series, no.16, pl.19. Another closely related example, which formed part of the celebrated collections assembled, partially under the guidance of R.W. Symonds, by Colonel H.H. Mulliner, Percival D. Griffiths and J.S.Sykes and sold by a descendant of J.S.Sykes, Christie's London, 16 November 1995, lot 308, is illustrated in R.W.Symonds, English Furniture from Charles II to George II, London, 1929, p.247, fig.211. A further example, also acquired under the advice of Symonds, was sold from the Samuel Messer Collection, 5 December 1991, lot 103.
