The stick back chairs and armchairs made in Ireland during the 19th and into the 20th centuries form a clear and distinctive group. They have the characteristics of being made with hand shaped back spindles and legs (although very occasionally ornate turned chairs of this type were made), which are morticed and wedged through the seat and comb rail. On the armchair, the outer spindles are morticed through the separate arm sections and it is this feature which, more than any other, designates the chairs as being from Ireland; elsewhere in Britain, Windsor chairs have arms which continue around the back. The four legs are not united by cross stretchers.
