    Lot Essay

The antique marble of the Arrotino was first recorded in a drawing by Marten van Heemskerck, who was in Rome between 1532 and 1536. The marble was much sought after and changed hands many times until it was bought by Cardinal Ferdinando de Medici, who had it in the Villa Medici by 1594. It was sent to Florence in 1677 and has been in the Uffizi since 1680.
