Ettore Chiesa, a man born and brought up in Milan, now retired and unwilling to appear in public, has devoted over 40 years of his life assembling this extraordinary collection of chess sets. As often happens, Chiesa's collection started almost by chance and began by gathering as many pieces as possible, in no strict order, following only his aesthetic instinct. Eventually, an amateur interest was replaced by expertise, and his initial desire to build a large collection gave way to the passion to build a prestigious one. The process of collecting has not been easy but has lead to an intellectual adventure involving extensive research and study. The theme that pervades this fascinating collection derives from Chiesa's Italian heritage and the aspiration to rival large international collections.
