The current marble group is based upon the commission by the Brescian Count Paolo Tosio that Thorvaldsen received on 16 March 1815. The original marble group, currently in the Pinacoteca Tosio-Martinengo, Brescia (illustrated in E. di Majo, et. al., Bertel Thorvaldsen: 1770 - 1844, scultore danese a Roma, exhib. cat., Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna, Rome, 21 October 1989 - 28 January 1990, pp. 161-162, cat. no. 29), was loosely based upon an earlier Ganymede from 1804 and in turn inspired a later figure from 1816 that is now in the Museo Thorvaldsen, Rome.
