This dancer is among a group representative of his continuous interest in serene human movement, ideally expressed through the dancer. Canova's knowledge of Greek relief Bacchanic maenad dancers is an initial reference, however, he also absorbed the contemparory fashion for tableaux vivants. Popularised by Emma Hamilton, among others, she was famed for her formal classical half dances and 'attitudinizing' performances.
