This tsuba has the Chinese character "Tada" as part of the design on the reverse. In this form it was a signature used by Umetada Masahide of Edo (fl. 1850). He is one of several artists who also signed with the plum (ume) rebus signature and the kanji "Tada". Little is known about him but many of his tsuba came to the west in the Meiji era (1868-1911).
