The present lot is a distinct variation of two very similar examples featured in Le Temps de Cartier, Barracca, Negretti & Nencini, Paris, 1989, pp. 171 & 188.
The two models illustrated in le Temps de Cartier are virtually identical consisting of an enamelled sphere resting on a simple band of either jade or enamel raised on four plain enamelled legs and a square plinth of enamel or agate. The present lot is an entirely different model; not only is the sphere veneered in lapis lazuli within distinct geometric silver-gilt borders but also the stand consists of three delightful jade owls with diamond-set eyes. The present lot is an altogether more interesting and innovative version of the standard example and it would appear to be unrecorded in any of the Cartier reference works.
