The God of War shown stiffly seated on a plinth decorated on top and the sides with foliate diaper and on the back with a large peony spray, his left hand resting on his knee and his right raised to his chest to hold a portion of his long beard, now missing, wearing layered robes decorated with lotus scroll over armor indicated by Y-diaper, his face with stern expression below a foliate crown

A very similar, but smaller bearded figure, was sold in these rooms, New York, 22 March 1999, lot 70. Compare, also, the larger embossed and gilded copper figure of Guandi in the Chang Foundation, illustrated in Buddhist Images in Gilt Metal, Taipei, 1993, p. 186, no. 86, where it is also dated 18th-19th century.
