Celadon stem cups of this octagonal shape appear to be quite rare. This same octagonal shape and type of free carving can be seen on dishes of 15th century date, several of which are illustrated by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, London, 1986, vol. I, pp. 332-3, nos. 367-72. A celdaon-glazed octagonal stem cup, also dating to the 15th century, is illustrated by M. Sullivan, Chinese Ceramics, Bronzes and Jades in the Collection of Sir Alan and Lady Barlow, London, 1963, no. C. 57, pl. 98a. Another biscuit-decorated Longquan celadon stem cup was sold in our Hong Kong rooms, 29 April 2002, lot 602.
